Book Club: The Next Best Thing

I read The Next Best Thing by Jennifer Weiner a few weeks ago and am linking up my review for Book Club Friday by Heather of Blond ... Undercover Blonde.

Summary
At twenty-three, Ruth Saunders headed west with her seventy-year-old grandma in tow, hoping to be hired as a television writer. Four years later, she’s hit the jackpot when she gets The Call: the sitcom she wrote, The Next Best Thing, has gotten the green light, and Ruthie’s going to be the show-runner. But her dreams of Hollywood happiness are threatened by demanding actors, number-crunching executives, an unrequited crush on a boss, and her grandmother’s impending nuptials.

Set against the fascinating backdrop of Los Angeles show business culture, with an insider’s ear and eye for writer’s rooms, bad behavior backstage and set politics, Jennifer Weiner’s new novel is a rollicking ride on the Hollywood rollercoaster and a heartfelt story about what it’s like for a young woman to love, and lose, in the land where dreams come true.

Review
I listened to this book on audiobook. It is a great light read, perfect for summer reading on the beach. I found the flashback chapters confusing to the flow of the story. however they really helped with the charter development. I loved Ruth, the main character. She was very funny and I loved her obsession with TV shows especially Golden Girls. I also enjoyed the different take on the story of a girl going to LA to make her dream come true. Usually they want to be an actress, model, or musician. But The Next Best Thing gives a behind the scenes look at the making of TV and what it takes to make it as a writer in Hollywood. The narrator of the audiobook was great and did all the voices justice in a way that made each charter distinct and added to the story. Overall this was a great book that is perfect for summer.

  2. This is one of the few Jennifer Weiner books I haven't read. But I have loved everything else by her, and I'm sure when I finally pick this one up, I'll enjoy it as well.
